Great British Fish and Chips arrive in Winchester
Where can I find the best Fish & Chips in Winchester?
Come to Shoal, the new independent restaurant and takeaway at the Guildhall, where traditional fish and chips rule supreme.
Fantastic Fish and Chips
There’s nothing more British than fish and chips. Freshly cooked and piping hot, it’s simple food rich with memories of seaside holidays, cold nights on the town and family takeaways.
Add in responsibly-sourced ingredients, experienced chefs and a welcoming atmosphere and you possibly have the best fish and chips you ever tasted.
The Best of British
The Fish and Chip shop, or ‘Chippy’, has been around for well over 100 years, becoming a staple part of the British diet. Nutritious and great value for money, fish and chips was even exempted from the ration scheme in both World Wars by Prime Ministers who recognised the value of this heart-warming and widely-loved food.
A passion for proper fish and chips
Today chefs can source the tastiest fish from a range of responsible fisheries, including local fishermen, helping sustain both the British fishing industry and fish supplies. So whilst traditional cod and chips remains the most popular choice, modern chip shops offer a range of fish to customers looking for a change.
“My passion is to cook delicious fish and chips for everyone, whether they want cod, haddock, plaice or gurnard - even scampi and vegetarian options,” says Lenny Carr-Roberts, chef and co-owner of Shoal.
Winchester’ Fish and Chips Expert
“I have vivid childhood memories of seaside fish and chips, and always dreamed of having my own fish and chip shop,” remembers Lenny, who is well-known in Winchester for bringing two local pubs back to life. He is an experienced chef, but knew that this British dish was worth extra investment of his time and energy.
“I was lucky to be trained and mentored by Fred Capel, owner of my absolute favourite fish and chip shop, Chez Fred in Dorset,” says Lenny.
“I’ve just completed more training in cooking perfect fish and chips on our brand new equipment at Shoal, and now I’m excited to bring the best traditional fish and chips to Winchester.”
Chips… and more chips!
Lenny is so confident you will also love his crunchy, fluffy chips that Shoal offers unlimited top-ups of chips to anyone eating in who wants more.
“We want everyone to leave our restaurant full and happy,” he smiles, confident that the welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere will bring customers back time and again to enjoy the hot, fresh food on offer.
Mushy Peas and a British cuppa
What is fish & chips without mushy peas, ketchup and a cup of tea? For the full, traditional experience Shoal serves the lot, with ketchup and tartare sauce, fresh-mushed peas, a rich and tasty curry sauce, proper gravy and a perfect pot of tea. Even your Granny will be beaming.
Of course there is plenty more choice too, with Shoal’s freshly-baked soft fresh rolls, fishcakes, rotisserie chicken, homemade hot-from-the-oven pies and scampi all jostling for a place on your plate. Add in an array of drinks including bean-to-cup locally roasted
select wines, small craft brewery lager and Founder’s Reserve cider to quench your thirst and everybody’s happy!
Pies, Vegetarian and Vegan
Shoal’s fish and chip-based menu caters for far more than just fish-eaters. Vegetarians and vegans can choose banana blossom or fresh homemade pies to accompany their chips, while meat-lovers can indulge in fresh from the spit roast chicken or meaty pie and chips.
